Prison Photography - A Conversation with Mishka Henner

As part of the university's visiting lecture series, print-on-demand bookmaker and photographer Mishka Henner came in to show and talk about his practice a few weeks ago. His work covers a variety of different fields and his approaches to photography as a medium and bookmaking are unconventional to say the least.

If you missed the lecture, shame on you. But photography blog, Prison Photography, has just posted a transcribed conversation between the artist and Paolo Patrizi. Go take a look by clicking the link below:

The Institute of Critical Zoologists - 27th April to 17th June

Another date for the calendar. Cardiff's Chapter Arts Centre have an exhibition coming up which opens next week co-curated by two ex-Newport students,  Lauren Jury and Helen Warburton, who graduated from Photo Art and Doc Phot respectively in 2008.

The Institute of Critical Zoologists (ICZ) works with artists, scientists and researchers to develop a critical approach to the zoological gaze. Motivated by current ecological concerns, the heart of its practice addresses the human regard for animals as conveyors of meaning with values that are both culturally and politically specific.
Taking factional environments as a starting point for quasi-factual scenarios, projects are realised as installations, photographic art works, archive material and expedition reports. The ICZ aims to test the role of art and photography in the dissemination of knowledge and acceptance of truths.
Chapter has worked in collaboration with the ICZ to present its first UK retrospective exhibition that interrogates the boundaries between the seen and the unseen, art and artifice, credence and fantasy; exploring methods of allegorical representation and interpretation.
In March 2012, ICZ artist Zhao Renhui undertook a residency at the National Museum Cardiff that has informed part of the research for this exhibition. An installation by the artist is open in the Natural History Galleries at the Museum between 13 March and 17 June 2012.
Pauline J Yao writes, Zhao’s work "may be truthful depictions or artful fabrications, but it hardly matters: Zhao succeeds in proving that our assumptions about reality must be rigorously questioned if not, on occasion, fully abandoned". (Best of 2010, Art Forum)
There is a preview of the show on April 26th from 6pm-8pm so hopefully we'll see some of you there!

In other news...

Early this week on Thursday the monthly Photography Presentations at Newport's Le Pub started up again after the Easter break. We had a number of Italian visitors from Florence in attendance who are doing an exchange with a number of Doc Phot students. I hope they enjoyed the night and their visit to Newport as a whole!

The night was dominated by 3rd Year students showing a variety of projects and it served as a good reminder that the university's exhibition season is just around the corner. We on 2nd Year Photo Art are just about to start planning our end of year exhibition to be shown at The Riverfront in Newport which will open May 18th, and a few weeks after that it will be time for the graduate show(s?) from all three photography courses.

Watch this space for more information on when those shows will be.

Stuart Bailes @ Edel Assanti, London

The second year Photo Art students who recently went to Berlin were introduced to Newport alumni Stuart Bailes, who discussed his practice, life after university as well as showing us around his Berlin studio.

Whilst there he mentioned an upcoming show - his first solo show - at Edel Assanti in London this summer and the details of the show have just emerged, so go check it out if you can!

Curated by Nadim Samman

26th April - 2nd June 2012

Stuart Bailes graduated from Photographic Art at Newport in 2007.

"I am interested in the mechanics of the image. I want to know what something will look like as a photograph. What form does a code or symbol take? How does an encounter appear to us?"

Edel Assanti is pleased to present Stuart Bailes’ first London solo exhibition, an overview of the artist’s practice over the last two years. Stuart Bailes’ evocative compositions are the documentation of the artist's exploration of human sensory experience, and our interactions with the physical and metaphysical world. His work is as much an interrogation of the limitations of our capacity for visual analysis as it is an investigation of the reductive process of representing reality through the medium of photography. In Bailes’ own words: “My work is about decision making; it’s about deciding to understand or not to understand.”

Newport Survey - Preview

Currently on at the University of Wales, Newport city campus is the Newport Survey show. The show is on until 20th April.
The 2012 Newport Survey exhibition represents a celebration of the project undertaken by Documentary Photography students and Graphic Design students at Newport throughout the 1980s to capture life in the city during the decade. Not least, the exhibition celebrates the connection between photography and Newport. The South Wales Argus newspaper produced a campaign publishing photos from the Newport Survey and calling on any readers who recognised themselves or others to come forward with their stories relating to the images captured. The many responses are testimony to the continuing capacity of photography to touch the lives of individuals, families and their communities.

Book Launch - Inside the View by Helen Sear

Dr Helen Sear, a reader in photography and fine art practice at the University of Wales, Newport, recently saw a retrospective book of her work published by Ffotogallery. It's a beautiful publication. Go find it!

Book Arts Fayre, Penarth

The second Book Arts Fayre, organised by Penarth's Ffotogallery, was a brilliant event recently. Congratulations to the Newport students who took part and sold their wares. If you missed the fayre, make sure you keep an eye out for the next one. Not to be missed.

Berlin

Over four days in the February, second year students from Newport's Photographic Art course went to Berlin! There was a lot of walking, visiting galleries and immersing ourselves in the all the beer culture the city has to offer.

As well as exploring the city, seeing its landmarks, and seeing its bustling art and photography scene, we were introduced to former Newport student Stuart Bailes and shown around his very impressive studio, as well as Ben Absalom and Sam Bardsley. Ben was also a former student at Newport and the pair showed us some their previous work as well as some very exciting works in progress, as well as inviting some of their friends along who also showed us some of their work.

The trip was a great success, and many of us fell head-over-heels for the city.
